A common theme of my family’s home renovation projects is to make our house more livable and family-friendly. Our latest project, widening our front patio and sidewalk, makes spending time in the front yard much more enjoyable.

As you can see, our fifty plus year old sidewalk was super narrow and uneven. Our front patio was narrow as well, with the brick edging enclosing our little patio into a long rectangle.
(Before, sweeping off the front porch was a pain, since it meant going around the brick edging.)
Hubby came up with the idea to knock out the bricks in front of the patio, in order to extend the patio with concrete. Where we previously had a step from the sidewalk to the front patio, now it is all one level, with a slight ramp where the patio extension meets the sidewalk extension.
We quoted a few different concrete contractors, before choosing the contractor with the best price.
The concrete crew arrived early in the morning and started tearing out the old brick and sidewalk. (Hubby originally planned on doing the tear out himself, but when they quoted only a couple hundred dollars for tear out and haul off, we decided to let the concrete guys go ahead and take care of the demolition.)

Once the demolition was complete, a concrete truck came and parked in the street in front of our house. The crew used wheelbarrows to transport the freshly churned concrete from the truck to our patio and sidewalk area.

Eventually, we will paint the old patio concrete so that it matches more closely to the new concrete.

Note that the previously white shutters are now Navy. Hubby spray-painted them for a quick and easy update. (Would have been easier if the shutters were removable, but it was still relatively simple. My job, adding painter’s tape so that the blue paint did not get on the bricks, took the longest.)
Now that our front patio is more family-friendly, I am already dreaming about getting a porch swing and nicer patio furniture (though that may have to wait until next year.)
What do you think about the patio and sidewalk renovation? What is your latest home renovation project?
